A Family Leisure Park is Being Built Near Veliky Novgorod

The Legends of the North family leisure cultural theme park will be built near Shevelevo village on the bank of the Volkhov. Holmgard ethnic settlement, which was presented to the stakeholders on the 9th of July, is the “heart” of the project.

Holmgard is a composite vision of an ancient city. Its visitors will be able to see with their own eyes how the lords and vikings lived before the Principality of Novgorod came into being, to dive into the atmosphere of Ancient Russia. A lot of activities for both grown-ups and children will be offered, including workshop sessions in crafts, a shooting gallery, thematic shows.

Aleksandr Barkovsky, one of initiators and investor of the project, told us that the whole Northwestern region was reviewed in search of a site for the cultural theme park. The Novgorod Region was chosen first of all because of its location between two capitals.

“And, plus, picturesque scenery, of course, a beautiful field with difference in elevation on the bank of the river, surrounded by forest. We want to make it authentic, with full immersion in history and nature. Naturally, we work closely with historians, reenactors, but in construction we are using modern technologies, finding compromise,” Aleksandr Barkovsky says. “We will try to make the park so big that it would not be possible to see it all in one day, and so will make our guests want to come back. By next year we hope to open for tourists, and the visitors will be able to come every day.”

The topic of promoting domestic tourism was continued by participants of the “Experience Tourism as Driver of Tourism Development in the Northwest of Russia” round table. It took place at Holmgard within the framework of the cultural theme park presentation business program. The attendees were welcomed by Deputy Chairperson of the Novgorod Region Government Elena Kirilova. One of the round table speakers, Minister of Investment Policy of the Novgorod Region Denis Nosachev, pointed out that the cultural theme park project is important both from the tourism development and from the general economic point of view.

In addition to that, on the 7th of July the cultural theme park construction investment project was presented to the Novgorod Region Governor’s Council for Improvement of Investment Climate. Aleksandr Barkovsky informed the Council members that by 2027, in addition to the cultural theme park, on the plot exceeding 60 ha there will be a glamping and a camping, a restaurant, a recreation camp, an eco-farm and a hotel. Around 150 people will be working at the cultural theme park in five years from now. The amount of investment in the project will constitute 1.1 billion rubles.
