Novgorod Region Took Part in the Opening Ceremony of Russian-Japanese Interregional and Sister-City Exchanges Year

Opening ceremony of Russian-Japanese interregional and sister-city exchanges year took place on January 29 online. Novgorod region together with 28 other Russian regions took part in it. Minister of investment policy Denis Nosachev, his deputy Julia Alexeieva and director of Novgorod region development agency represented the region.

The welcoming speech of the minister of economic development of Russia Maxim Reshetnikov was read by his deputy Vladimir Ilyichev. The speech noted that the coronavirus pandemic wasn’t an obstacle for Russia and Japan to increase the pace of cooperation.

Vladimir Ilyichev and minister of foreign affairs of Japan Yoshimasa Hayashi, who joined the event from Sapporo (Hokkaido) signed additions to the Memorandum of Understanding between ministry of economic development of Russia and foreign ministry of Japan concerning Russian-Japanese interregional and sister-city exchanges year. The parties think that it contributes to the growth of regional authorities to establishing relations with Japan.

Denis Nosachev said that cooperation of Novgorod region and Japan started in the middle of 1970s when the 2nd ammonia production unit was built and continued in making other manufacturing sites, educational and cultural areas.

E.g., in December 2020 ministry of economic development of Russia and Novgorod region development agency held Russia-Japan business dialogue. Due to cooperating with KOHSHIN company in October 2019 the largest poultry complex in the region "Belgrankorm - Veliky Novgorod" launched a plant for drying and granulating biocompost. This is the 1st production site in Russia made according to Japanese technology.

Novgorod state university cooperates actively with Japanese universities. NovSU lecturers carry out scientific researches together with Japanese colleagues.

In 2018 several performances of Novgorod children and youth theater “Maly” were included into the official program of the cross year of Russia and Japan in culture. In November 2020, programs of celebrating of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 200th anniversary and Dostoevsky international theater festival were introduced to the Japanese tourist companies, cultural institutions and mass-media.
