Novgorod region got the 2nd place in TOP-30 of the ranking “Race of regions: Who will be the quickest in attracting investors, tourists and consumers from China”? The ranking was prepared by iMars group. Primorsky krai, Buryatia, Moscow and Rostov region are also among the leaders.
The results of the study were presented during the panel discussion “Ranking of communicative readiness of Russian regions for working with China” which took place on November, 18, 2019 in international information agency “Russia Today”. Victor Bykov, deputy director of Novgorod region development agency - head of department of attracting investments and supporting investment projects, took part in its work. He told to the participants of the meeting that Novgorod region development agency carried out targeted analysis of the work of enterprises and supporting measures for business in China to be able to use these instruments.
“We translated investment portal of Novgorod region novgorodinvest.ru and tourist portal visitnovgorod.ru” into Chinese. One of our enterprises – “Honey house”, signed 10-million-yuan contract for export of honey during the forum SIAL China in 2019. An investor from China addressed us – he found an appropriate investment site on our investment portal and now he is creating a production of wooden crockery” - told Victor Bykov.
Regions were evaluated upon the results of gathering information from open sources and upon the results of questionnaires of the representatives of regional development institutes within the structures of regional executive authorities in every region.
During 9 months of 2019 external trade turnover between Novgorod region and China was 393,4 million USD. Export to China was 209,4 million USD. Main goods exported to People’s Republic of China are mineral fertilizers (PJSC “Acron”), wood and goods made from wood (LLC “Hasslacher Norica Timber”). Nine companies with Chinese capital are located and operating in Novgorod region.
Ministry of investment policy of Novgorod region told that work with exporters is carried out in two directions in the region. Firstly, the activity of these companies is analyzed. According to Bank of Russia, they were 55 in the region in 2018. Majority of them are small and medium-sized business entities, that’s why they get for free the services of Novgorod center of export support, attend export seminars, participate in business-missions. The region also counts on tourist services. Promoting of tourist event calendar of the region, in foreign languages as well, is continued. The region participates in international tourist exhibitions. Regional tourist information centers are working.
