The construction of a new high-speed railway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg is expected to boost tourism in the region. According to the Governor of the Novgorod Region Andrei Nikitin, the project could increase the annual number of visitors to 5 million.
Nikitin also noted that the high-speed railway will have a positive economic impact. Federal economic institutes estimate the construction will create around 5,000 new jobs. Additionally, the project is projected to generate approximately 89 billion roubles in additional revenue for the regional budget.
The Governor discussed the settlements the new high-speed railway will pass through. He stated that Podberez'e is currently under consideration. The exact route will be determined based on the existing Veliky Novgorod - Chudovo railway line. The line will bypass the Nevskoye Gas Storage Facility and Valdai National Park, exiting in the Okulovka-Uglovka area, where an additional stop will be added. "In any case, the new line will be as close to the city as possible without disrupting historical landscapes", Andrei Nikitin added.
The route will be extended by approximately 20 km, with an expected increase in travel time of only 2 minutes. New generation trains capable of reaching speeds up to 400 km per hour will be introduced. Preliminary work is set to begin next year, and construction is scheduled for completion by 2027. The project will commence with the construction of exits from Moscow and St. Petersburg, followed by the section between Veliky Novgorod and Tver.
